Here’s our roundup of the top mattress brands in Europe, known for delivering the best in comfort, quality and durability.
European mattresses come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so there’s something for every type of sleeper. Whether you’re looking to make the investment into an organic mattress or just need that extra layer of comfort as you get older, we’ve got all your bases covered.
Co-founded by Dutch businessman Gerard Arink in 1947, Serta International is the world’s largest manufacturer of mattresses. Today it is a $2 billion company with factories in 15 countries and 10 manufacturing plants. In addition to its popular line of mattress brands, Serta sells linens and other bedding products as well as furniture, including a collection named for one of its founders: Gerard Arents. The company has two retail chains—Bestway Furniture & Mattress Wholesale and Bestway Home Furnishings Retail Stores—and an e-commerce site (www.bestwayhomefurnishings.com). Its headquarters are located in Goshen, Indiana; the CEO is Patrick Harker.
The first mattress company started in Chicago around 1900 and was named “Starr Mattress Company“. It is the direct origin of Tempur-Pedic (TPI). In 1902 after extensive research by Charles Floyd Foster Sr. a man who had worked as a salesman for Sargent’s Fluff & Feather, they decided to start their own company with some of the fundamental principals that still stand today. As time went on, these were: 1) high quality materials (100% cotton) 2) Zero Stiffness 3) comfort…and 4) no odor. They continued to refine their technique until 1948 when they launched what would become one of America’s leading bedding products: The Tempur-Pedic® brand name. The company expanded quickly and became known for its high standards across the entire industry – not just mattresses. Sobering up from World War II, new leaders took over during the 1950s and 1960s when reputation really began to take off among both consumers and retailers alike . Today it is home furnishings giant owned by AGCO Group Inc., formerly Stearns & Foster Companies which purchased them in 2003.
Founded in 1989, Encore is a manufacturer of sleep and support products that are sold globally under the brands Comfort Back by Leesa, Zinus and Fusion Mattress Company. It has manufacturing facilities in Aurora Colorado where it also distributes; has sold products in Canada and Mexico for some time; its website is www.encore-sleep.com . The company employs 1,000 people worldwide with headquarters located in Illinois, according to the National Business Employment Weekly (www2.nberwqc.webflowapps.net/homepage ). As of July 2012, it is co-owned by Anheuser Busch Companies and Halliburton.
Founded by David Green and Steve Vavrek in 1995, the company sells mattresses through online and retail outlets, including www.greenlymattress.com . In 2004 they bought a factory located in the same city as their headquarters: Greenville, South Carolina. In 2006 it was purchased by Leesa in a deal that also included the purchase of Greenly’s 10% stake and its manufacturing plant making sleep products for Tempur-Pedic; it is now part of the Encore operation.
Tempur-Pedic is a leading manufacturer of mattresses and bedding products. It has more than 500 retail stores in 46 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, Canada and Mexico as well as more than 30 other countries worldwide—including China, Taiwan, Europe and Japan—and it sells through its online website: www.tempurpedicusa.com . The company has two headquarters located in Phoenix; the CEO is Mark Pivarunas; there are about 1,600 employees at both locations. In 2011 TPI was acquired by Tempur Sealy International for $4 billion dollars.
Leesa is much like Serta: co-founded by Dutch businessman Gerard Arink in 1947; headquartered in Goshen Indiana where he now runs the business with his son Paul Arents; has manufacturing plants around the world including China and Taiwan; sells linens and furnishings online or at more than 2200 retail stores around the globe via its own website www.leesanetworklifestyle.com ; employs 1,700 people globally with headquarters located just outside Chicago Illinois near Naperville Illinois along with three others locations throughout North America.) Its CEO is Darryl Madden who joined back in 2010 after serving for 11 years at Cabelas Stores Inc.; it reportedly grosses between $3 billion-$4 billion annually.
